Colour Testing

The colour scheme I want to use for my magazine will be gray scale colours and a two contrasting feature colours. I had alredy made the decision to steer clear from the typical colours for a music magazine; red/white/black as I feel they are too common and can look quite messy. I have yet to decide the second feature colour but I already know I want to use a shade of purple as purple is slightly feminine (my main target audience consists of females) yet it isn't overly feminine that it would discourage male's to buy the magazine. Also relating to the fact that I want my music magazine not to be tacky (like smash hits) and more like a fashion magazine (Elle,Pop,Vogue) as I am personally influenced by them. The Purples I decided to look at are these, and I have decided to use either the purple on the top right, midle right or the bottom centre. These are quite warm colours
and would contrast with the black/grey/white colours which are normally quite cold. After looking at these purples I have decided to use a yellow as my third colour, as it visually contrasts with purple. My inspiration for this comes from the Kate Moss edition of POP magazine. The pink/yellow/grey used in the cover stands out yet doesn't look messy and too 'look at me'. I also like how the 'Angel' is the only word on the cover written in yellow, this would attract attention to the word and I find it very effective.
I think that using the colour pallette grey/black/white/yellow/purple would look different and quirky on a newstand, and therefore attract attention. It also relates to my chosen genre of mainstream pop as colours used in album covers and promotional posters are usually quite bold and bright, rather than a typical red/black/white used in rock music. I also think by using these colours properly I could create a sophisticated image rather than a typical pop magazine which use bright, contrasting and quite aesthetically unpleasing colours when together. I will experiment further to see which colours suit my model/style/font and layout.
I also need to be very wary of my influence of fashion magazines, and focus mainly on music magazines as I don't want to create a fashion magazine rather than a music magazine. Another cover I am influenced by is the Miley Cyrus edition of Billboard. I find the yellow and purple really effective and would aim to acheive a happy medium between the Kate Moss and Miley Cyrus Cover. I also like Miley holding the letter 'M', so I will look into Sara holding a letter S, as I think it adds to a fashion sense, yet doesn't completely distract the fact it is a music magazine.
